Resting Heart Rate – There are many equations in the literature that can help us set training intensity correctly. The well-known Karvonen equation also takes into account our Fitness Level based on Resting Heart Rate ** (i.e. how many times our heart beats at rest), and is as follows:

In practice, how to perform the calculation:
For a 35-year-old athlete with a resting heart rate of 50 beats per minute who wishes to exercise at 70% of MHR, representing moderate activity, and wishes to monitor training intensity, the calculation should be as follows:
70% MHR = 50+(70%*(220-35-50)=50+ 95=145 beats/minute.
Intensity calculation equation based on age
E.g. 70% MHR=0.7*(220-35)=130 beats/minute
From the above equation, we can see that the difference between the two calculation methods is 15 beats (130 beats/minute using the simple method, compared with 145 beats/minute using the Karvonen method). This difference exists because we are referring to a trained individual with a good level of fitness.
Why is there a difference?
The answer is simple and understandable. The difference is due to the fact that a fit, trained circulatory system can work at higher intensities without becoming as fatigued as a less fit, less trained circulatory system.
