Knee Pain in Athletes and Recreational Exercisers

One of the most common knee conditions affecting runners and hikers is knee pain. Overloading and minor inflammation in the long tendon that runs along the thigh, starting at the pelvis and reaching just below the knee, lead to severe pain after a number of kilometres. The condition may occur in high-level athletes as well as recreational exercisers.

Symptoms: – Pain during sporting activity, mainly after a few kilometres (other activities, such as ball games, do not cause these symptoms as frequently).- There is often bothersome friction on the outside of the leg, a few centimetres above the knee.

Possible causes:

A sudden increase in training volume

Poor body preparation before exercise

Tight thigh and hip muscles.

Unsuitable running footwear

Running on sloping terrain

Treatment:

Pay attention to and address any factor that causes pain symptoms

Choose alternative forms of exercise, such as cycling or swimming

Try to increase training load progressively

Pay close attention to preparation and recovery

Choose your sports shoes CAREFULLY
