How Much Protein Does an Egg Contain?

ΑΥΓΑ ΠΡΩΤΕΪΝΗ

We all know how important eggs are in our diet. One key reason is that they are a rich source of protein. Protein intake is very important for the development of muscles and bones, as well as for our overall health.

How much protein could one egg provide?

A medium-sized egg contains 6–7 grams of protein. However, the amount of protein is also affected by the size of the egg.

Small egg (38 g): 4.9 g protein

Medium egg (44 g): 5.7 g protein

Large egg (50 g): 6.5 g protein

XL egg (56 g): 7.3 g protein

XXL egg (63 g): 8.2 g protein

How much protein does each part of the egg contain?

Most people believe that the white part of the egg contains all the protein, while the yolk contains all the nutrients and fats.

However, the yolk can contain up to half of the total protein in the egg (2)

Therefore, to consume the total amount of protein in an egg, we need to eat the whole egg.

In addition to high-quality protein, eggs are rich in nutrients such as vitamin A, folic acid, vitamins B5, B12 and B2, phosphorus, selenium, vitamins A, D and K, vitamin B6, calcium and zinc.

Does cooking affect the quality of the protein?

One study found that protein absorption from cooked eggs was 90%, while the figure for raw eggs was 50% (3).

Similar results were reported by another study, in which the absorption rate for cooked eggs was higher than for raw eggs (4). Based on the above studies, we can conclude that cooking eggs helps our bodies absorb a higher proportion of protein more easily. In addition, eating raw eggs carries various risks of food poisoning.
