Athletics in our country is among the most traditional and widely practised sports. In recent years, although there has been an increase in the number of children attending clubs’ introductory sections (in our country), attendance, especially among boys, is not comparable to that of other popular sports. To make the sport more attractive to children, various measures are proposed internationally, with the main focus on implementing new teaching and training methods and content, most notably strengthening play-based teaching and making greater use of games at school and in clubs.
Recognising this need, the book’s authors have placed great emphasis on play-based teaching, providing as much play-oriented content and as many resources as possible.
The book is divided into four parts. The first part covers the technical analysis of athletics events; the second discusses the application of athletics in physical education lessons in primary and secondary school, in accordance with the curricula of the Ministry of Education & Religious Affairs; the third concerns competitive sport, specifically athletes at the introductory and basic training stages; and the fourth part covers the rules governing athletics events.
The book features:
- 87 images accompanying the event techniques,
- 357 exercises with approximately 700 illustrations,
- 95 games with corresponding illustrations,
- 189 tables covering the phases, assessment criteria and the most common technical errors in the events
- 27 sample daily PE lessons for schools and 30 training sessions for club sport.
It is aimed at students of Departments of Physical Education and Sport Science, for both the theoretical and practical study of athletics; PE teachers who have not specialised in athletics and need to teach it at school; and club coaches working with introductory sections.
