Although weight plates may seem like a simple product, they are in fact considerably more complex. Their production process, in order to achieve a very good result, is difficult and multi-stage, while quality varies significantly from one plate to another. We will try to explain the process and what consumers should consider before making a purchase.

One of the first factors that makes a difference in a weight plate is its thickness. This is because cast iron is a mixture of iron and carbon. The thicker the plate, the less iron the mixture contains, therefore the cheaper the product is, but also the lower its quality.

For good-quality plates, the weight may vary by +/- 5%. If it is greater, the quality of the plate and the quality of the factory process are not good.

The finishing process is as follows. First, once removed from the mould, the plate is ground and polished very thoroughly for a perfectly smooth finish. It is then painted with special anti-rust coatings for initial protection, and placed in large ovens to be baked so that the anti-rust coating adheres effectively to the plate. Proper baking provides the first and most important level of protection, as well as an attractive appearance. Finally, the plate is treated with special oil – varnish, which gives it shine and protection. The quality of the materials used by the factory can be seen in the gloss of the plate. The glossier it is, the better the materials are. If no proper baking is carried out, or none is carried out at all, as many factories do to reduce costs, the plate will rust very quickly.
