ALTRA Lone Peak 9+ Men’s: the iconic trail shoe that built a community
If there is one model identified with Altra’s mountain philosophy, it is the Lone Peak. Since its first appearance in 2011, it has gained an almost cult following, particularly among hikers and thru-hikers seeking natural movement, room for the toes and reliable durability over endless kilometres.
What is the “9+” and why does it matter?
The Lone Peak 9+ retains the same Lone Peak character (balanced cushioning, protection and control on varied terrain), but introduces a key upgrade: Vibram® Megagrip. This changes underfoot feel on wet and rocky terrain, as Megagrip is designed for more secure traction in conditions where mistakes are costly.
What is it designed for?
The Lone Peak 9+ is ideally suited to trail running, day hiking and thru-hiking. It sits in the protection sweet spot: enough cushioning for long hours of movement, without excessive stack height that could reduce trail feel and control.
Underfoot feel: natural position with 0mm drop
With a 0mm drop (equal heel and forefoot height), the shoe keeps the body in a more neutral, natural position. This helps many runners feel more evenly loaded through each step, particularly when terrain changes constantly. Proper adaptation is required if you are transitioning from a higher drop.
Midsole: Altra EGO™ for “just-right” cushioning
The Altra EGO™ midsole is designed to provide balance: comfort and cushioning without excessive softness, combined with controlled responsiveness to help maintain pace across dirt and rocky sections. With a stack 25mm, it provides sufficient protection for long days while remaining grounded.
Outsole: Vibram® Megagrip for traction when terrain gets challenging
The Vibram® Megagrip offers an advantage in mixed conditions (dry/wet, rock, dirt). Compared with more conventional trail rubber compounds, it is designed to provide more secure grip when footing becomes uncertain, particularly appreciated on descents and wet rocks.
Protection: StoneGuard™ for rocks and sharp trail obstacles
The StoneGuard™ acts as an internal protective layer beneath the foot. It reduces pronounced pressure points from rocks and gravel without making the shoe rigid. This helps maintain better ground feel with less strain.
Upper: ripstop, breathable and ready for long distances
The ripstop mesh upper provides resistance to abrasion and tearing while remaining breathable for extended use. The no-sew overlays support the foot without heavy stitching. The fit provides generous volume, helping to avoid pressure when the foot swells over long distances.
The fit that made Altra famous: Original FootShape™
The Original FootShape™ Fit is Altra’s roomiest last. It provides space in the forefoot for the toes to splay naturally, supporting balance and comfort on the trail, especially during long hours of movement or on descents where the toes typically become compressed.
Gaiter-ready: GaiterTrap™ for a clean trail, clean shoe
With the GaiterTrap™, you can attach a strapless gaiter without modifications. This is useful on trails with fine gravel or dirt, reducing debris entry and maintaining a more consistent feel inside the shoe.

Why it sells so well: the Lone Peak profile
The Lone Peak did not simply become a best-seller. It became a go-to choice for those who want a durable shoe that accommodates the foot as it is and supports natural movement in real mountain terrain. The 9+ adds Vibram® Megagrip traction and boosts confidence on the terrain, without changing the identity that made the model iconic.
